The purpose of this study is to validate a self-regulation scale to be used by parents with young children aged from 0 to 6 years. Young children from the ages 0 to 6 were recruited using a quota sampling method segmented by region and age based on national criteria. This research used data collected from 893 mothers of young children. The self-regulation measurement scale for young children was tested with Exploratory Factor Analysis. First, 96 questions were selected through a refinement process and the validity of the resulting self-regulation measurement scales was analyzed by age. Second, the Cronbach`s α coefficient was used to calculate the reliability of the self-regulation measurement scale. The results showed that the reliability of the entire age groups was distributed between .97 and .98 and that the reliability of the sub-factors was distributed between .94 and .99.

This study examined maternal beliefs in children`s bilingualism. Five Korean mothers who were raising young bilingual children in the United States were interviewed. The findings in this study showed that the Korean mothers believed in children`s bilingualism had positive values. They perceived Korean- English bilingualism as a positive influence on children`s well-being, children`s emotional makeup with their family, and children`s educational development. They played a critical role in teaching Korean in various ways based on their positive beliefs. However, they worked individually on their children`s bilingual education and had difficulty in receiving support from the school or the community. They needed support from the school system to maintain their beliefs. The results of the study suggested that American mainstream schools should work together with parents from minority groups and foster a supportive environment for Korean-English bilingual children.

The goals of this study are to explore cross-national and gender differences between American 3-yearolds` and Korean 3-year-olds` shame and guilt behaviors and their mothers` reports of their shame and guilt. It was predicted that Korean children would show more shame while Americans would show more guilt, and that girls would show more shame while boys would show more guilt. Results indicated that although mothers reported higher guilt in American children than Korean children, Korean children were actually quicker to show guilt behavior than were American children. As predicted, Korean children showed higher levels of shame and maternally reported shame than American children. Similarly, as predicted, girls showed more shame than boys, and although mothers reported more guilt in boys than girls, boys were slower to show guilt behavior than were girls.

As few studies have investigated how contrasting models of professional development might impact teachers` learning experiences, this study examined how individual and collegial models of professional development impact early childhood teachers` cognitive and emotional experiences during the National Board Certification. The findings from a longitudinal, comparative case study suggest that the individual model facilitated a high level of self-reflection at the expense of feelings of isolation and frustration, while the collegial model without critical feedback led an early childhood teacher to uphold a status quo at the first year of candidacy. This study discusses the implications of facilitating optimal professional development that balances early childhood teachers` independent work and collegiality.
